Job Summary

Reporting to the supervisor of the Carpenter shop, the selected candidate will be responsible for assisting in the supervision and coordination of the Carpenter shop. This person will be highly motivated and a self-starter with excellent communication and organizational skills that will allow them to work directly with Campus Staff, Faculty, and outside vendors.

Essential Job Duties

Responsible for creating/following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
Use the IWMS for daily staff employee work management timekeeping reviews and approvals.
Use the Caltech Timekeeping System KRONOS for daily review of staff timecard activity for payroll.
Enhance customer satisfaction by establishing regular communications regarding maintenance and repair activities for affected discipline(s).
Perform field inspections to review work progress and resolve work conflicts.
With input of Supervisor, oversee the Inspection and maintenance of all facility roofs.
With input of Supervisor, oversee the maintenance and installation of all building envelope waterproofing.
Work with Project Managers in estimating, design and layout of projects, scheduling and monitoring of projects and provide necessary materials information.
Works closely with other departments and shops in Facilities Management to optimize productivity. Manage Caltech resources for optimum productivity.
Utilize the Caltech Facilities Materials Management processes to support the efficient ordering and deployment of materials.
Respond to trouble calls, emergency conditions and analyze routine work requests for timely execution and completion.
Perform and maintain up to date records for all safety inspections, tests, maintenance, and repairs.
Maintain technical proficiency with new equipment technologies, regulatory requirements, and engineering advances in improved operational performance.
Manage shop personnel for performance, training opportunities, and work schedules.
Provide written and oral reports effectively.
Respond to campus emergencies 24/7.
Assumes duties as supervisor when supervisor is on vacation or otherwise not available.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

Eight years’ experience in a large campus or facility. Overseeing a team and taking part in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair crews.
Ability to modify and/or adapt designs, procedures, or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications.
Advanced furniture and cabinet building skills.
Communicate professionally with the members of the Caltech community in all situations.
Software proficiency in MS Word, Excel, MS Project, and Outlook.
Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
Skilled in estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish task.
Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to maintain it throughout the course of employment.
Strong English oral and written communication skills are required. Use correct punctuation, vocabulary, spelling, and sentence structure. Follow written instructions.
Must be in good health with the physical strength and agility to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis, bend in all directions, climb stairs and ladders, squeeze with arms and hands, operate machinery using hands, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
Strong teamwork, project management and problem resolution skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in related field.
Proficiency with AiM (Asset Works) and Kronos or similar preventive maintenance and timekeeping software would be a plus.
CNC machine experience.
